Water Ionizer PreFiltration Basics

Should I Pre-filter

The internal filtration system in the Tyent water ionizer - just like most water ionizers - is going to remove chlorine, VOCs, lead and most common contaminants.  Like most water ionizer companies, Tyent's internal pre-filtration system is designed to purify the water to a level considered to be safe based on industry standards.  The media used in most water ionizers in the industry are pretty much the same.  The majority of internal filters are going to be rated to remove the same common contaminants.  If your buying a Tyent or Alkalux water ionizer, you are getting the largest internal filter capacity in the industry.Tyent Filter View

Only about twenty to twenty-five percent of people ordering a water ionizer will choose to supplement the units internal filtration system with some type of pre-filter.  Of those that do choose to pre-filter most are concerned about fluoride, or those who have source water issues such as well water and/or older plumbing.  Me, I’m happy with the job my internal filters are doing.View Prefiltration Options

Fluoride Removal

If your looking for 99% fluoride removal, well - so am I - and so are a lot of people world-wide.  The fact is,  fluoride is the most difficult substance to remove from water.  Its base element Fluorine, is one of the most electromagnetic elements on earth which means it actively bonds to other substances and does not want to let go.  This is what makes it so difficult to remove from water.

The most common solution for fluoride reduction is a media called "Activated Alumina". Activated alumina is also rated to remove led and arsenic, both of which are common in source waters at some level.  An activated alumina pre-filter will reduce fluoride content by 80-90 percent in most cases.  Even at 80-90 percent removal rate the EPA has long considered Activated alumina to be the BAT (best available technology) for fluoride reduction.Fluoride Prefilter

Well Water & Other Concerns

Other common reasons people will chose to pre-filter would be condition specific to their source water.  Well water typically has higher concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and/or heavy metals.  Hydrogen sulfide is often referred to as "sulfur" because of the rotten egg smell but it’s actually a byproduct of the decomposition of organic materials.  KDF 55 removes or signifigantly reduces both heavy metals and hydrogen sulfide and is the most common solution for customers on well water.

Another reason customers would choose to invest in a pre-filter is if they have homes with older plumbing that could be leaching excess metals to the water as well as sediment.  In this case KDF 55 pre-filters are often used in combination with a sediment pre-filter.  This helps to extend the life inside both your KDF pre-filter and your internal filter.KDF Prefilter

Most Well-Rounded Solution

C3 Pre-filtration System

The most common choice for customers on municipal water supplies is the C3 Pre-filtration System.

This 3-bank filtration system was designed to remove chlorine, chloramines, heavy metals, lead, arsenic and sediment with an activated alumina cartridge for fluoride reduction.  The C3 Prefiltration systemcan extend the life of your Tyent or Alkalux internal filters by up to 75 percent.C3 Prefiltration System

Hard Water & Soft Water

These conditions are relatively easy to treat.  Simple in-line solutions are available to prevent scale build-up inside your water ionizer or add minerals back into the water for effective ionization.

While hard water is the more common issue, in some parts of the country - and for some people on well water, the mineral content is inadequate to allow for proper ionization.  This can be a lack of mineral content or the wrong combination of minerals in the water.

Reverse osmosis and distillation systems also strip minerals from the water making proper ionizaton impossible.  If you're using an RO or distillation system for your source water you will need some sort of "remineralizing" prefiltraton solution in order to get the ionized water you want.

Simple inline solutions are available to address almost any hard or soft water issues.Prefiltration Options
